Brave Souls Live at Wesleyan Church

I was recently invited to do coverage for a local Christian band called Brave Souls at the Northside Wesleyan Church here in Terre Haute. Of course I jumped at the opportunity to help get the word out about some more talented local musicians. I arrived with my camera in hand and left thoroughly impressed with some killer footage, ringing ears and, believe it or not an improved religious outlook, which is exactly what the band set out to accomplish.

Unlike previously covered band Caught in the Headlights, which is composed of some talented up and coming new comers to the Terre Haute music scene, most of Brave Souls’ members are seasoned veterans and it shows. The band consists of Travis ,Matt Buell on bass, Bryar Nevins and Jeremy on guitar, David on keyboards, and Adam slamming the skins.

Everything about their show displays the groups musical know-how which stretches from near flawless execution (well… except for the second song) to the thoroughly entertaining performance of onstage antics to the brilliant song writing, these guys obviously know what they are doing, and they know how to give fans exactly what they want: a stellar performance.

Like I said before, their performance was nearly flawless. In fact, the only song they had trouble with was performed well until Adam lost the rhythm for a split second which threw everyone off. In Adam’s defense, I’m a drummer and it happens. If you can’t hear one instrument you can get lost and of course everyone relies on the drums for a rhythm. It’s a lot of weight to carry! Needless to say it was a minor problem that was quickly swept under the rug and the song was restarted with no remorse. Except for this one problem Adam performed wonderfully with brilliant fills and transitions which perfectly complement the rest of the instruments.

Brave Souls want pants too!!

Brave Souls want pants too!!

My favorite thing about the band? They know not to take themselves too seriously whatsoever. These guys are all just plain silly, and it’s wonderful to watch on-stage. The only complaint I have has nothing to do with the band at all. I just feel that these guys can perform better on a bigger stage. Matt, Bryar and Jeremy constantly dance around with so much energy even on this little stage, I can’t wait to see how they do when their full potential can be relinquished in a larger venue.

Needless to say these boys know how to run a rock band. And while fans have them to thank for a wonderfully entertaining Saturday night peformance I’m sure these boys have only one thank you to give out, and that thank you goes to God. The band says He gives them all their talent and that without Him they would be nothing. Regardless of what you believe, after watching Brave Souls’ performance which was made possible by the Big Band Manager in the Sky I felt a light, pure, tingling sensation in my heart. Possibly from the heart felt prayers and thank you’s to God, and possibly because He was sitting above us watching a performance dedicated to Him. His presence is a powerful thing, afterall!

  1. Awesome. There really aren’t that many christian bands around my neck of the woods that don’t sound like Creed. Its really sad.

    These guys are good, though.

I really enjoy seeing smaller bands play. Its neat to see what some of these kids are capable of.

  2. That was an awesome show! The sunburst summer surprised me, brave souls was just as good as expected and farewell was just plain awesome.

The only thing that sucked was that youth group guy. He was so unbelievably ignorant!! I almost walked out when he said in reference to Obama being elected: “we as Christians are probably a little edgy with that”. And “is Obama a christian? I don’t know”. Ignorance!!!!

    Sorry, great show, though!
