[DVD Review] Breaking Bad: The Complete Second Season

Overview:

I’ve already detailed my love of the AMC series Breaking Bad in previous posts, so I’ll stop the whole backstory schpeal and just state that the Complete Second Season is now on DVD and it’s awesome.

Review:

Season two begins at the exact location season one ended, as chemist turned meth dealer Walt (Bryan Cranston) and his partner Jesse (Aaron Paul), have witnessed a brutal and meaningless attack orchestrated by their new distributor Tuco (Raymond Cruz) on one of his associates. This sets in motion the overlapping theme from the end of season one that Walt and Jesse have gotten in way over their heads. Continue reading

[Movie Review] “Whatever Works” (DVD)

whatever worksOn paper, teaming ace Curb Your Enthusiasm curmudgeon Larry David with legendary curmudgeon writer/director Woody Allen is ideal. Or at least maybe it would have been had Allen not stopped being a relevant filmmaker years ago. Still, my love of David made me excited to rent their collaborative effort Whatever Works when it his DVD shelves this week. But in case my snarky second sentence didn’t give my opinion away, let me leave no doubt. This movie sucks.

Plot Outline:

The movie tells the story of Boris Yelnikoff (David), a crotchety, know-it-all, former Pulitzer Prize nominated Physicist, who leaves behind an upper class lifestyle after a failed suicide attempt. The miserable Boris despises everything and everyone. Then one day, he meets a beautiful 21-year-old Southern Beauty Pageant contestant named Melodie (Evan Rachel Wood), who he begrudgingly forms a romantic bond with despite a four decade age difference and the fact, as Boris points out constantly, she operates at a much lower intellectual level than he does. [DVD Review] Young & Handsome: A Night With Jeff Garlin

garlin Overview:

For years, I have enjoyed the work of Jeff Garlin as Larry David’s manager on “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” arguably the best American comedy series of the past decade. He has a very likable screen presence which plays off the curmudgeon brilliance of  David quite nicely. So when I saw Netflix was streaming his new stand-up DVD “Young & Handsome” a week before it hit stores, I was very eager to view it.

Sadly, while Garlin’s likability is still very present on stage, much of “Curb’s” hilarity isn’t. “Young & Handsome” is occasionally amusing but never hilarious, at times a bit tedious, and it lacks the polished feel you’d expect from a stand-up concert DVD. Continue reading

[Movie News] Star Trek DVD and Blu-Ray Bonus Content Revealed

poster_startrek-posterAnd man is it insane. There is seriously a (space)ship load of extra content planned to release alongside the “Star Trek” DVD/Blu-Ray which is tentatively scheduled for an October 5th release date. But tentative dates rarely stick, so just keep an eye out for the date to change.

To see the full list of extra content included in the package, click the ‘more…’ button. The list is far too long to include on the front page. Continue reading

Review: Jim Gaffigan’s “King Baby”

jimgaffigankingbabyOverview:

After weeks of having to suffer through the standard “Long Wait” crap Netflix puts you through for new releases, I finally received my copy of “King Baby,” the latest DVD special from ultra-pale comedy star Jim Gaffigan.  Was it worth the wait? Yeah, for the most part I would say it was. But I do plan to elaborate so if you are interested in learning more, then by all means do continue reading.
