[Food Review] Taco Bell’s Beefy 5 Layer Burrito

For most of my life I’ve had a pretty casual opinion of Taco Bell. I always found it to be a moderately enjoyable fast food eating experience, but not one that would regularly make it to the top of my dining out list. That’s changed over the last year or so though, as their expansive collection of cheap menu items have been keeping my poor, emaciated ass alive.

So as a newly appointed fan  I was somewhat eager to try out the latest addition to their $.89 value menu, the Beefy 5 Layer Burrito, and I must say it was more than tasty enough to reach my moderately high expectations.

What first caught my attention was the size of the item. The ads make it look fairly large, but for its meager price tag, I anticipated this was just a deceptive ploy by those Madison Ave. fat cats to trick the working class into thinking they were getting a filling product for such a reasonable price. Not so. The Beefy 5 Layer Burrito was very filling and proved to be a very economically sound purchase.

As for the ingredients, it contains “layers of seasoned ground beef, beans, real cheddar cheese and cool reduced-fat sour cream all wrapped in a flour tortilla with a special layer of warm nacho cheese sauce.” These are all fine fixin’s in and of themselves, and they mix together very well when thrown into this burrito. There isn’t one dominant flavor here. I probably tasted the beans slightly more than anything else, but all together the flavor was balanced and all elements combined together nicely.

Another impressive feature is the nacho cheese sauce. Like most losers who get the majority of their nutrients off of fast food, I am a sloppy eater, and an outwardly oozing nacho cheese just reeks of mess making possibilities. Luckily, my Sunday shirt, which is essentially soaked with every stain imaginable, did not accumulate any further filth while ingesting the 5 Layer. There’s enough there for you to taste it, but not so much you end up wearing it, which is yet another important balance this product strikes.

Final Words:

If you are a fan of the Taco Bell lineup, it’s hard to think you’ll find much not to like about the Beefy 5 Layer Burrito. It’s cheap, balanced flavor-wise and above all, tasty. I don’t know how long it will stay on the $.89 menu (my suspicion is not long), but I would encourage any fast food aficionado to take advantage of it at this price.

Pros:

  • Tastes good
  • Cheap
  • Well-balanced
  • Clean

Cons:

  • Beans are slightly more pronounced than the other ingredients

Score: 8.5/10

  2. Why don’t you guys just nut up and admit to being a Taco Bell Propaganda site? If you did, I’d have so much more respect for you.

Go fart on soap and sniff it.

Anyway, I can’t seem to get one made properly. There’s always too much sour cream or too much gooey cheese sauce, and they never put the shredded cheese in between the two tortilla shells. Speaking of which, I feel they give a very tough and chewy texture to the whole thing.

I will always miss the Cheesy Double Beef Burrito, the greatest value menu item of all time.

  4. The cheesy double beef will always have a special, cholesterol clotted place in my heart, but at 30 cents cheaper with similar content (especially if you remove the sour cream) I just can’t say no.

I have yet to encounter this problem. Apparently I am getting the upper echelon talent from the burrito-rolling schools while you guys are getting stuck with fools who have settled for the GED level equivalent. It’s a shame because these guys are giving these fine institutions a bad name.

  6. dudes…that burrito is like the greatest thing ever invented in the history of man kind. The rolling that the people around my are use is perfect no mess for me.

  7. I bought two of these last night with a few quarters I dug out from the couch. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised that they were hot and tasty, considering I went at 2 in the morning. Good product and good review.

  8. Ah hah I’m in Delaware. No sales tax, bitches!

Good burrito but doesn’t hold up to the cheesy double beef. Definitely order without sour cream (And maybe ask for volcano sauce)

  10. It’s $1.37 after tax here in lovely Daytona Beach. It’s not on the $.89 cent menu but it’s delicious and I believe it’s still a good price. It’s always rolled correctly for me but I’ve always wondered what the 5th layer is because it seems to have 2 types of cheese (the gooey stuff and the shredded stuff) and two layers of the tortilla wrapping…
