[’09 Holiday Buyer’s Guide] PlayStation 3

The PlayStation 3 has seen a resurgence in both sales and interest. Part of this is due to a new PS3 model with an appealing $299 price tag. The other is a catalog of interesting titles for both young and old. As the big three battle for the inside of your wallet, here’s what Sony’s PlayStation 3 has to offer this holiday season.

2009 Releases

  • LittleBigPlanet: Game of the Year Edition

Take everything people all around the world love about LittleBigPlanet. You have the creatively designed levels, the customization, the level creation– all of that. Now add thirty dollars of downloadable material included for free. The community is as active and ingenious as ever, the game is constantly getting new DLC and patches, and Sackboy is still as cute as ever. For a great family game or one for aspiring video game designers, LittleBigPlanet: Game of the Year Edition is a great pick.

  • Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time

Dr. “Hilarious” Nefarious is back from being defeated by the hands of Ratchet and Clank  in Up Your Arsenal, and he is certainly angry. Help Ratchet and Clank restore order to the galaxy yet again in the humorous action-platformer. Providing a perfect mix between platforming and shoot-em-up gameplay, A Crack in Time is one of the best in the series since… well, Up Your Arsenal.

  • InFAMOUS

What’s it like having the powers of electricity? Find out in the open-world sandbox game, InFAMOUS, from the creators of Sly Cooper. Leaping from building to building, shimmying up ledges, and blasting enemies off buildings never gets old. It’s essentially two games in one, a dark side and a hero side. Okay, two games is definitely stretching it, but the game is so nice that you won’t mind playing through it twice.

  • Uncharted 2: Drake’s Fortune

Nathan Drake is back, the every-man he is. He’s got death-defying acrobatic ability as he leaps from cliff to cliff, awesome accuracy as he fires his weapons, and that irresistible charm that every man has. Yeah, every-man my foot. Nonetheless, don’t let that stray you away from this holiday season epic. There’s enough guns, girls, and treasure to make Indiana Jones want to throw in his whip! Don’t forget the cooperative and competitive based gameplay thrown in for good measure!

  • God of War Collection

Take two fantastic last-gen games, upscale them in HD, and sell them together for forty bucks, and you have God of War Collection. Both games were some of our favorites from this past generation, and they’re some of the PlayStation 2’s best. For the hardcore gamer who isn’t squeamish about slaying humans and harpies alike, wrap up a copy of God of War Collection to put under the tree… after you buy it first, of course.

  • Resident Evil 5

The damn dead just won’t die! Resident Evil 5 takes the award-winning mechanics of Resident Evil 4 and utilizes them in a brand-new adventure. Meanwhile, offline or online co-op gameplay has been added into the mix offering two players to blast their way through the undead at their own leisure. For the person on your list with a bloodlust, Resident Evil 5 may just be right up their alley.

  • Batman: Arkham Asylum

Be the bat in this game that should have been horrible. Comic-book adaptation? Check. Unknown developer? Check. However, this game turned out to be one of the best games of the year. Batman controls excellently, and all of his moves and gadgetry are here. Good thing, too, as the likes of the Joker, Poison Ivy, and the Scarecrow want to see him dead! For the Batman fanatic on your list, check them into Arkham Asylum this Christmas.

Essentials

  • LittleBigPlanet
  • Resistance: Fall of Man
