[Energy Drink Review] Awake: Good Morning Energy

awakeenergyOverview:

We all know mornings are very important and that they shape the rest of your day. A day that starts with a good morning will almost always end with a good night. But if you wake up groggy and grumpy, stump your foot on the dresser, burn your toast, cut yourself shaving, lose a sock, and forget to brush your teeth, your day will likely end by finding out that you have syphilis.

We also know that there are many different ways to make sure you wake up in a good mood to make sure everything flows smoothly for the rest of the day. Getting the recommended eight hours of sleep or eating a healthy, balanced breakfast should do the trick. But if you’re like me, you stay awake until 3:00 AM playing video games and eating mashed potatoes and wake up three minutes after you are supposed to be at work, you don’t have time to eat a nutritious or filling breakfast.

Enter Awake: Good Morning Energy, an energy drink designed specifically to give you the energy you want before getting your day started. But does it work?

Straight from the can:

Awake. Think of it as your morning wake-up call… in a can. A great tasting 100% juice packed with performance boosting nutrients and the kick of a stiff cup of joe. Awake delivers what we like to call good morning energy. The most important energy of the day. Energy that you can rely on. Energy that sticks around. Energy that treats your body better with a unique blend of natural juices, b vitamins, and the superstar ingredient essentra. Rise and shine brighter. Awake to good morning energy.

Review:

When I opened my first can of Awake, I really needed what it said it had to offer. I had just finished enjoying my paid vacation and it was my first day back at work as a Kroger courtesy clerk. Ugh. It was early in the morning and I couldn’t get to sleep at a decent hour since I was busy playing The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, which is far more important than something as trivial as work or sleep.

I popped the top on the bright orange can and held it up to my nose for a whiff. It possesses a nice, tangy orange scent with a slight hint of tangerine. It reminds me of the cheap orange juice they served at my High School during standardized tests that took place in the morning. I hate standardized tests.

I raised the can to my mouth, which was now watering from the tangy fragrance, and took a decent-sized swig. Disgusting! Oh man, it was horrible! I continued to force it down to make sure I could properly analyze the drink’s kick when I noticed a small text next to the Nutrition Facts that read ‘Shake well before Awaking.’

I covered my hand over the tab and furiously shook the can, hoping that it would make the drink at least slightly less painful to pound down. And wouldn’t you know it, that made all the difference. What was once a sour and unappealing beverage that tasted like cough syrup, orange juice, and vodka was now delicious. The juice is tangy and sweet, and somewhat lighter than orange juice. It’s very pleasant, albeit a little sour, and goes great with a quick breakfast.

The kick you’ll find in Awake is perfect for the mornings, which is no surprise since that is what it’s specifically formulated for. It’s a weak, slow boost that lasts around 3 hours before slowly tapering off, leaving no crash to ruin the rest of your day. If this were supposed to be anything other than a morning supplement, the kick would be laughable, but it does exactly what it claims to do.

Awake comes in a single-serving 12 0z can for $1.50, which is exactly what I’d expect to pay for it. Downing one of these things every morning would definitely prove expensive in the long run, but if you love energy drinks and are forced to work mornings, the service it provides is definitely worth the cost.

Final Words:

How much you’ll enjoy Awake really depends on your daily ritual. If you are forced to wake up in the mornings for school or work, it is definitely a fantastic drink that does exactly what it says it will do and provides great morning energy. However, it is only good as a morning drink, and it is laughable as anything else.

  1. Have you ever tried Rumba Energy Juice? It had orange juice in it and tasted like orange juice with a little bitterness, but overall pretty good. It was my energy drink of choice for a while, until the 7-11 down the street stopped selling it.

  2. Yeah, Rumba is pretty solid. It’s a lot less smooth-tasting than this stuff, but the kick is also a little more accessible and is more useful than just a morning buzz.

  3. Dude, I LOVE Rumba! Haven’t had it in months, though.

As far as this goes, I’ve never seen it but would like to try it if it’s even half as good as Rumba.
