[Tech News] I Guess Nintendo Isn’t Really Making a Phone Anytime Soon

A long while back some of you readers who are, like myself, hardcore Nintendo geeks, might remember a leaked patent that pointed to a possibility of a Nintendo-made cell phone. When that was released, fans went insane thinking about the possibilities that could become reality with introduction of a “Nintendphone” to the market. Since that day Nintendo has hinted at the possibility of a phone being in the works, saying that they’d be all over it if they could find a way to provide service without complicated monthly fees.

Until now.

nintendo-phone-patentEngadget reported an article today that contained a quote from Nintendo of America’s Reggie Fils-Aime stating “Telephony is not in our wheelhouse. It’s not something I anticipate us getting into.” This essentially busts the bubble of every fanboy dreaming about a smart phone from the big N.

But the possibility of a Nintendo phone still exists, provided the technology becomes available. There are already VoIP services like Skype that make calls for free, and Nintendo’s Satoru Iwata has stated that the only thing keeping the phone from happening is monthly costs and fees and the complications of service providers.

And for anyone wondering about the image included in this post, that’s simply the patent that was filed a while back. A real Nintendo phone would not look that 1990’s. I hope.

  1. I agree with Stencil

But had Nintendo decided to pursue this device in particular, I’m not sure what the reaction to it wouldve been. But liike you said, I’m sure Nintendo would make something far more attractive now.

  2. Yeah, I remember when they showed this off. I was excited I think, cant relly remember though.

Anyway, yeah iPhones are overrated but they are still excellent phones and there is no way a phone that looks like that would hold up in todays market.
