Review: Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (Xbox 360)

Star Wars the Force Unleashed

Overview:

System: Xbox 360 (also on: Wii, PS2, PS3)
Developer: Lucas Arts
Publisher: Lucas Arts
Genre: Action

I am not a huge Star Wars fan and I have never been a large supporter of the games that Lucas Arts has been pumping out, save the Lego Star Wars, but many fans welcomed this game with open arms, so I gave it a shot. I mean how could you not get excited about a Star Wars game that supposedly allows strong use of ‘the force’, right?

Story:

The story behind this game isn’t the most in depth but it serves the purpose and follows the Star Wars universe quite well. The game takes place between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. Darth Vader is on the planet Kashyyyk searching for any remaining Jedi and he finds a young child which has amazing power with the force. He secretly drafts him to the dark side as his apprentice unknowingly to Emperor Palpatine. When the child hits adulthood Darth Vader sends him to find remaining Jedi and other missions. Emperor Palpatine finds out about him and tells Vader to kill him. Vader beats the crap out of him and pushes him out to space, just to turnaround and salvages the body and bring him back to life. He is a little angry at Vader and breaks free of his hold, then claims he turns good and tries to help the rebels.

Gameplay:

When I first started this and was playing as Vader I felt the game to be simple okay and I have seen better. Then I used the force and pushed a Wookie through a building and the destruction was just exhilarating. This game does not let you down when it comes to the power of the force. Force lightning is awesome and works how you would expect it. Combos are creative and have you thinking why this stuff hasn’t been delved into before. However there are issues with jumping and falling off cliffs. It’s a little too easy to fall. When you fight a harder enemy and get him near death a sort of cinematic attack scene happens and you have to press certain buttons within certain times. They are pretty creative as well. But you have to focus on what button to press and miss the fight scenes. But all in all the game plays quite well. The upgrades in general are creative but what you would expect. The scenery is exciting in the beginning and the use of the force on it is pretty cool but the scenes get old as you start going back to the planets you have already been to. It would have been nice to keep traveling to more planets, but oh well.

Sound:

It’s what you would expect in a Star Wars game. The game developers could have done a lot of things to better it but its a pretty solid game.

Graphics:

Well the graphics are pretty good, in my general opinion they reach about par with gaming these days. I guess one notable input is the colors in the different levels generate a different mood. But most people wouldn’t look at it that deep.

Final Words:

If you like Star Wars then I would recommend this game to you. If you don’t like Star Wars then I would recommend that you try this game ’cause it has a lot going for it other than just a Star Wars background. I would rate this game pretty fun over a serious hard core game that you would get addicted to.

Pros

  • The force
  • Decent visuals
  • Fighting is solid
  • Story follows as it should

Cons

  • Falling off cliffs is frustrating
  • Scenery can get boring (As well as gameplay)
  • Not for Serious Hard Core gaming (Could be a Pro as well though)

Score:

Overall: 7.5/10

Story: 7.0/10
Gameplay: 8.0/10
Audio: 7.5/10
Graphics: 7.5/10 (Nothing Groundbreaking)

  1. I enjoyed this game to the end, although it did start to drag halfway through. Its a decent title, but Rogue Squadron will always remain my favorite SW game.
